June 29, 2018: Maddy and Julia met at a beach bar while both spending the summer in Hawaii. Maddy stayed for all of 20 minutes — enough time to watch a few fireworks, take exactly one sip of her drink, and confuse Julia when she left abruptly. 

Fortunately, Julia decided to give Maddy a second chance. The next day they spent almost 10 hours together exploring the Honolulu Zoo, the Jamba Juice at Waikiki beach, and the street market (it had waffle corn dogs). From then on they were inseparable, finding time to adventure between their work schedules and making crazy plans to visit each other after they returned to their homes 2,000 miles apart. A few months later they made good on their promises, celebrating Maddy's birthday in East Lansing and Julia's in San Diego. 

After finishing her undergraduate degree, Maddy took a leap of faith and moved out to California. (It helped that her best friend just happened to live down the street from Julia)! Since then, they've weathered every storm and soaked up the sunshine together: three cross-country moves, a 7-month deployment apart, a graduate degree, multiple major career shifts, adopting the world's best dog, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way.
